Greetings from Los Angeles! Our prayers have been answered! Andrew Smellie – the World Sector Leader for Africa – just received a two year, multiple entry visa to Nigeria! Lord willing, Andrew will leave LA for Lagos to “spy out the land” on November 2nd and return November 11th!

Andrew is returning to his beloved Africa in early November to lay the groundwork for the planting of the Lagos International Christian Church!
In this endeavor, he will be nobly assisted by Goodhope Atason, the Mainline Church of Christ preacher that joined God’s new movement in September, as Goodhope leads the Lagos Remnant Group! Therefore, given the “Nigerian Call” by Benedict Atason (Goodhope’s father and also a new member of the SoldOut Movement), the fact that Lagos’ population of 21 million is the largest city on that great continent, and the incredible number of Nigerian nationals in the movement, the decision has been made for the Crown of Thorns Church in Africa to change from Johannesburg, South Africa to Lagos, Nigeria! Lord willing, Andrew & Patrique Smellie will plant Lagos in April 2016!

Seattle, Washington: “The Word of God continued to increase [numerically] and spread [geographically]!” (Acts 12:24) God is leading His movement to more and more USA cities! On Sunday, October 25th, the announcement was made that the Seattle Mission Team will leave from LA at the same service that the Lagos Mission Team will be sent out – April 3, 2016! Joel & Courtney Parlour of Syracuse feel very honored to lead this momentous planting!

The team will be composed of disciples from Syracuse, Portland, Eugene, San Francisco and LA! Praise God that the Spirit is raising up Anthony & Maria Franklin to take up the Parlours’ mantle and lead “the little church that could… and did” – the Syracuse International Christian Church!
According to Wikipedia, “Seattle is the largest city in… the Pacific Northwest Region of North America, and, as of July 2013, is the fastest-growing major city in the United States! The Seattle Metropolitan Area of around 3.6 million inhabitants… includes Tacoma and Olympia!” As well, Vancouver, Canada – a metro area of another three million – is only 120 miles to the north, and Portland, Oregon – birthplace of the SoldOut Movement – is only 150 miles to the south!
Since Seattle is only a three hour drive from Portland
and five hours from Eugene, these congregations
are particularly inspired to plant the largest
city in the Northwest!
Interestingly, one of the nicknames for Seattle is the Emerald City! And indeed Lord willing at the planting in April 2016, this “somewhere over the rainbow” place is where “skies are blue, and the dreams that [disciples] dare to dream really do come true!” No longer will the lost be “sleepless in Seattle,” but the gospel of peace, hope and love will be preached!

Jacob Beas of Sacramento: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I PRESS ON to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (Philippians 3:12) Greetings from the newly planted Sacramento City International Christian Church! Though our Inaugural Service was September 13, 2015, God has already blessed our “baby planting” with three baptisms and two restorations!

Of note, we just finished our two week campaign entitled, PRESS ON! God really blessed the faith and hard work of the Sacramento State Campus Ministry as we had the largest Bible Talk on our last week of the campaign with 21 visitors! Also even more exciting that week, we had our first campus student baptized! Our new brother Jazz is a Computer Engineering student and a member of Alpha Pi Alpha Fraternity! Great things are happening in the capital of California! Please keep us in your prayers!

Kyle Bartholomew of the Philippines: Greetings from the Metro Manila International Christian Church! Upon the mission team’s arrival, we decided to begin focusing on three main campus areas. 1) NORTH: The University of the Philippines and Ateneo led by Zach Shields & Ariel Butler. These are arguably two of the top three universities in the Philippines! 2) WEST: The Manila Campuses led by John & Anna Malnegro. This area consists of a large collection of universities, namely La Salle University which is considered the other of the top three universities in the Philippines! 3) CENTRAL: The Makati/Mandaluyong Area currently led by Jason Alejandro and Rose Sabrino. This area also holds a number of great universities such as RTU and University of Makati!

Since our Inaugural Service on June 7, 2015, God has grown our campus ministries from just four disciples to an incredible 39 sold-out disciples! So miraculous is that the UP Campus Ministry has grown from zero to 11, the Central Campus Ministry has grown from zero to eight, and our fastest growing campus ministry in Manila has grown from just four disciples to an amazing 20 disciples in just five short months!!! This past Sunday was another astounding example of the incredible harvest of young people that are coming to God, as Reymer, Ralph, and Phillip were all baptized into Christ!

Reymer was a religious young man who is also a tremendous student athlete at the RTU Campus Ministry! He is the champion in the martial art sport of Arnis at RTU! After watching a young disciple named Clieford share his faith daily at the RTU Campus, Reymer approached Clieford and asked if he could be a part of his church as Reymer was amazed at Clieford’s personal example! After a few weeks of studying the Bible, Reymer made the decision to put God first in his life and was baptized into Christ!

Ralph, a soccer player at RTU, had studied the Bible a few times but was deceived by Satan to still feel confident in his relationship with God. Yet after studying Discipleship on Friday before Campus Devotional, Ralph was stunned as he realized he was not a true disciple and wanted to get baptized as soon as possible! He studied all day Saturday, and after giving up everything was baptized into Christ on Sunday!

Lastly, Phillip who graduated from Ateneo-Davao and is currently a master’s student at the University of Philippines was baptized into Christ! Very exciting is that Phillip’s baptism opens an incredible door at the University of Ateneo! Although currently a UP student, he lives in Ateneo’s dormitory! This is a very private university and one we have been praying to get onto! We are praying that as the Phillip of the Bible took the gospel to all of Samaria, the Phillip of the Philippines can take the gospel to all of Ateneo!

Joe Willis of Sydney, Australia: G’day Family! “Clap your hands, ALL YOU NATIONS; shout to God with cries of joy.” (Psalm 47:1) It brings us such joy to be able to share with you all the incredible things God is doing through our campus students! There is definitely an emphasis on students here in Sydney, as 19 out of our 35 disciples in the congregation are studying either full or part time!

We are on four of the five main universities in Sydney, with a Bible Talk on the fifth! As well, we are at three other colleges! God is amazing as we have been able to see so many miracles through our student outreach!
Andrew is an incredibly gifted Aussie, who was baptized this past year, and studies Mechanical Engineering at the prestigious Sydney University! Andrew is extremely excited to have our brother Brian from Santa Barbara join him on campus as Brian starts his Psychology studies at the beginning of the new year! Lord willing, there will be a new Bible Talk here starting in January!
Our largest campus ministry is on Macquarie University, which is led by our dating couple Sean & Teigan! We have five full time students! We playfully (and joyfully) call it the “Chinese Ministry” as Sean & Teigan are the only two that aren’t Chinese! Although this is true, God has been able to use them powerfully to baptize Calvin, Dean “The Machine” (who also leads a Bible Talk on campus), Jeremy and Maggie – all Chinese young people! Despite the culture challenges coming to Australia from China, these dynamic students have grown an amazing amount in such a short time and have really taken up the calling to go back to Hong Kong when God calls them!

Recently, God has allowed us to start a new Bible Talk at the University of New South Whales (UNSW)! This is led by Chi Leong, who just moved from our fellowship in Chicago and Jenna Loheed, who recently started interning for the church. These two have been on campus every day, and God has definitely blessed their efforts with fruit in the first three weeks! Here Chi met and baptized our new brother, Cain – who is from Taiwan! And it doesn’t stop there as we also have two beautifully bright Aussie women, Chidera, originally from Nigeria, and Leslie who’s family is from Ghana, at Western Sydney University, and are both studying nursing and have amazing hearts for God.
Additionally, studying part time at colleges are, Erick, Sean, Jade, Merari, Pete – our missionaries, as well as Keiko and Themis! Also, we have been able to see God work not only on campus but in schools! Edward and Vatherine, two young and zealous students from China, were baptized just a day apart and are excited to welcome their friend and another young student, Z, who was baptized just this Saturday morning!

What seems impossible is always possible with God! Thank you for all your love and support and please continue to pray for us here in Sydney! We love you with the love of the Lord!
Mike Patterson of Gainesville, Florida: “I looked and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.” (Revelation 6:2) In the apocalyptic vision, some believe that God shows John the Apostle the white (for purity) horse and its rider “bent on conquest” which is to bring the purity of the gospel to the ends of the earth! In the city of Gainesville, 57% of the population is made up of college students! That means that out of five people you share your faith with in this city, about three will be college students! A powerful campus ministry in this city is an absolute necessity!

The University of Florida (UF) is one of the most internationally perse colleges in the States and has been called the “Public Ivy League” of the South! With nine baptisms and one restoration in the church since August, the disciples have been “bent on conquest” to evangelize the world, realizing through campus ministry it can be done from the UF! God has given us a campus ministry of 24 enrolled UF students and 11 enrolled at Santa Fe College – ranked the # 1 community college in the USA this year! Collectively, we have begun studying world missions at our last Campus Devotional. I announced how each “LIFE Group” (Bible Talk) will be assigned a nation of their choice or from the SoldOut Movement’s “Crown of Thorns Project” to study and prepare a presentation on how they would prepare to plant a church there if it was just them. We talked about the cost of moving, learning a new language, adapting to the culture, learning world religions, raising money (Special Missions which the GICC has raised over half for November!), persecution, imprisonment, and even death!

I then paralleled that to how we can begin training now here at the UF by breaking up the campus into five geographic zones. These zones are based on “Population Centers” where thousands of students hang out and study such as the Reitz Union and The Hub, as well as “Living Complexes” (dormitories and Fraternities/Sororities), and Campus Housing (surrounding apartment complexes filled with students). By being willing to uproot our housing and current LIFE Group locations, we will go to these new places which have more people to reach out to. I unleashed our “Campus Conquest Plan” to send “mission teams” of LIFE Groups to these untapped Population Centers! This plan will help us to reach opinion leaders on campus that can only be reached by going to where they are!
As well, I challenged our campus ministry to pay the price of humiliation and rejection in reaching out to opinion leaders! In practical terms, this means being willing to move back into the dorms just to be around more students to evangelize, joining intramural sports teams to reach out to their members, and being willing to stay in Gainesville after graduation to help build the church!
Excitingly as well, we have our first ever Women’s Day coming up this Saturday with the theme UNMASKED! Helen Sullivan of Orlando will be the keynote speaker!

Already in our campus ministry, God has blessed us with three thriving All Women’s LIFE Groups: 1) The Lakeside Dorm at UF named “Christ Ambassadors,” 2) At Santa Fe College as “Birds of a Feather,” and 3) In one of the apartment complexes mixed with campus and singles which is named “Jewels for Jesus.”

Coltin Rohn of Boston, Massachusetts: Greetings from Boston, the “Promise Land” of Campus Ministry! Truly from a campus ministry perspective there is no other city in the world quite like Boston! Being only about 90 square miles, Boston has a population of over 650,000 people, making it the fourth densest city in the USA! Amazingly Boston is home to 56 different colleges and universities! Boston is also home of the oldest University in America, Harvard founded in 1636! Boston University is our largest college with over 41,000 students while second is Northeastern with 37,000 students! Amazingly, out of 655,884 people living in Boston, 336,273 of them are students!!! Pray for us as God has given us such a great charge in campus ministry!
Starting 2015 with only nine campus students, God has blessed us with 19 campus baptisms! We now currently have disciples enrolled at Berkeley College of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Fisher College, Northeastern, Mass Bay Boston, and the University Massachusetts – Boston! As well this year, the Spirit restored a very dear sister to many in the movement Bridgett Corban of Portland, Oregon! Of course it only took one campus retreat with Boston, NYC and Syracuse to help her see she should no longer “be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed!” (Romans 12:2) Thank you Joel Parlour, Chris Broom, Syracuse ICC and NYC ICC for making our Fall Retreat a time that we all could fall back in love with God and His family! This was one of the best retreats ever!

Another exciting addition is our Japanese brother Sanada Yuki! Yuki was very successful in Japan as a Computer Scientist. However, after a rough porce, Yuki decided to move to the States so he could study English at Boston University English School, hoping to fill the void in his heart. On the 26th day of being in the USA, Yuki – who was an atheist – was invited to Bible Talk! Though Yuki did not know what he was getting into, he came that very instant! On the 60th day in our country, Yuki was baptized as your brother in Christ!
However, after completing his course at BU, the government would only allow him 60 days to stay in the USA unless he was enrolled in another university. So in order to extend his student visa, Yuki signed up for a two week class at Kaplan which bought 60 more days! We are praying and trying to extend Yuki’s stay again, but be assured, his deep conviction is to move only to countries where we have a SoldOut Discipling Church! Excitingly Yuki starts his new job on November 2nd again as a Computer Scientist, a job he can work from “home” anywhere in the world! And to God be the glory!

Raul Moreno of Sao Paulo: We here in Brazil are very excited to see God’s dream of evangelizing the world in our generation become a reality! That said, evangelizing the world for us begins right here in Sao Paulo! With exactly 135 disciples in our congregation, we now have three regions that meet separately on Sunday! We have the East, West and South Regions! What is really exciting is that two out of our three regions are led by campus conversions from our University of Sao Paulo (USP) Campus Ministry!
Our West Region is led by a dating couple – Danilo Bataglin & Carol Portico! Both are majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering! Our South Region is led by Caio Costa who has a Masters in Physics, and turned down a scholarship to pursue his doctorate at Moscow State University in Russia to go into the full time ministry! Danilo & Carol are three years old in the Lord, and Caio is just two years old in the Lord! So now I better understand the importance of building the Campus Ministry! If we dare convert “five talent” disciples, in a few short years God gives us potential church leaders!

Indeed, the Campus Ministry is the main fountain of leadership for the Movement of God! Some may ask, “Why focus so much on the Campus?” I believe there are six reasons: 1) Idealism of Youth. “Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb.” (Psalm 110:3) It is usually young people that are idealists and want to change the world! That is one reason that we need to convert campus students at this very special stage in in life! 2) Unhindered by Life’s Problems. “An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.” (1 Corinthians 7:34) At the “campus stage of life,” most usually do not have to worry about debts, bills, husband, wife or kids. Therefore, you have more time to devote to Jesus’ ministry of seeking and saving the lost. You have more time to be trained!
3) Hearts Are Less Damaged by Sin. “…From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:15) Sin damages our hearts! Thank God that with Jesus, our hearts can be healed! Yet, the younger that one is converted, the more one avoids destructive sins and so this lessens the impact that sin has on your heart! 4) Talent. “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” (Luke 12:48) God gives talents for a reason; they are to be used for God’s purposes! On the campus, generally speaking, we find a greater percentage of talented people than those who do not have the privilege to go to university.

5) Nationals. “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19) Collectively speaking, the campuses in our cities attract students literally from every nation of the world! These “foreign nationals” are usually their country’s “best and brightest!” All of these disciples hold the potential to “go home” and not only plant the church in a nation that we do not have a foothold, but to become their Evangelists and Women’s Ministry Leaders! 6) Long life. This last reason is self-explanatory! The younger one is converted, the more time that one has to serve God! Also, usually the more energy as well!
Presently, we have 49 students in the Sao Paulo Campus Ministry! 34 are USP students, and last month, we had our Annual Campus Retreat with 70 in attendance!

Finally, God willing, we have the dream to plant the Rio de Janeiro Church in 2017! This church planting will mainly consist of campus students and the leaders of the mission team are Danilo & Carol!

Cesar Limon of Portland, Oregon: “Paul… took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the Word of the Lord. God did extraordinary miracles through Paul…” (Acts 19:9-11)
Grace and peace in abundance from Portland’s VISION ON CAMPUS Ministry! Imitating our first century brothers, we also have had daily Bible Talks on campus and we have seen God do “extraordinary miracles” as we have witnessed seven campus baptisms in the last seven weeks and one restoration! So since the Supplemental Mission Team from LA arrived in June, God has multiplied the Portland Campus Ministry as we started with 11 students and now we are at 24 awesome campus disciples!

So exciting as well, Domonique Diaz placed membership from the great church in Los Angeles and is dating our new full time Intern, Jorge Castillo!

All baptisms are miracles but there are two in particular that stand out! First was the spiritual union of the Mendoza brothers! Miguel who was living in Tacoma, Washington needed to move to Portland to be restored! His biggest cost was leaving his family, one of whom was his brother Gilbert! After trusting God and being restored, he moved to the brothers household here and then challenged his brother Gilbert to come visit! Gilbert visited once and was challenged to move after his Discipleship Study! He refused due to his job and after going back home he said things were just not the same after knowing the truth. So he quit his job and moved to Portland with the brothers and was baptized shortly after!

With all these new brothers in the house, they were in need of starting a new household! So they began to search and pray very specifically to find a low-price, high quality apartment, right next to campus! Long story short, God brings Sergio a few weeks ago into the brothers’ lives and they come to find out that he was looking for “Christian roommates” to move into his two bedroom apartment that is a block away from campus! After his baptism this past week, we initiated the new brother’s household! God always provides!

Lastly, we began the Fall Semester of the new ICCM-Portland! I am so excited to see what God does with these 16 students from Eugene as well as Portland! Big thanks to Tim & Lianne Kernan for flying down to give us an amazing first class – The Ten Commandments Of Preaching! Time to preach the Word! Love you guys!

Debs Rajan of Chennai, India: At the 2015 Winter Workshop earlier this year, Kip gently challenged us to focus on the Campus Ministry! In Chennai, all of our campuses are guarded and no outsider is allowed to enter. So we had to figure out a plan to get the students to come to us! That’s how Campus Chronicles was born! Once a month on a Sunday evening, we organize a Christian Chronicle Event and invite all the students we know to come! In the month of August, Parthiban, who is doing his PhD in Mathematics; Pamela Edwards, who has done her Double Masters in Physics and was a Lecturer at Women’s Christian College; and Prathap Kumar, who has done his Masters in Social Work and is a Professor in Hindustan College of Arts and Science, shared their lives vulnerably and quite powerfully!

In the month of August and September alone we had 16 campus baptisms! In the beginning of this year, we were only on three campuses. Praise God now we are on 10!

Prayerfully, some day it will be “chronicled” that not only every campus in Chennai was reached with the gospel but every campus in India! To God be all the glory!

Los Angeles, California: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9) On Saturday, October 10th, the light of love shined brightly in the North Region with the wedding of Salvador & Perla Mosqueda! “Sal” as we affectionately call him was restored about two years ago from our former fellowship and has been praying earnestly to find a wife! God answered his prayer! Relatives and parents and many disciples from our former fellowship came to celebrate the union of these two incredible disciples! To God be the glory!

The last two months have been incredible in the Central Region as they have enjoyed two amazing weddings. What an incredible miracle it was that after 20 years of being faithful in the Lord, Nate Reed married his best friend Bianca Bell on September 6th!

The most beautiful little girl was born to first time parents Pat & Sparkle Boea who lead the Vine City Sector in the Southland Region! Mila weighed in at 8lbs. 13oz.! Pat shares, “What we love about our little Mila is her spunky personality! She is so innocent, talkative and fun loving! Our lives have been forever changed for the better as a result of her birth! She has helped us to understand God’s love on such a deeper level. She is such a great addition to the family and we couldn’t imagine our lives without her joyous presence. Daily we are reminded of the Scripture that says, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him.” (Psalm 127:3)

Chennai, India: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) On October 11th, Franklin & Meena Prabakaran were married!

In retrospect, Meena’s life is a modern day fairytale! She grew up on the streets and hardly had three meals a day. She started working at a very young age as a maid to help both herself and her family, as her dad had passed away when she was 12 years old. She worked for 10 years and supported her family. After getting into a relationship, she was rejected by her boyfriend because he found a “better bride” who was wealthy. Because of this her mother used to beat her and said that she was a burden and a disgrace to them.
Her former boyfriend’s words to her that she was a “beggar” and her mother’s words that she is a “disgrace” kept playing on in her mind and she decided to end her life. As she walked towards the railway station, she questioned God, “Do you exist? Are you for real? I dare you to change my life. Maybe I should just die.” She sat down waiting for the train to arrive, so she could throw herself in front of it and end her life. As she waited, Gayatri came by and invited her to church! Gayatri shared her life and about Jesus being the Savior! She also shared Jeremiah 29:11 that God had a plan to prosper her! Meena accepted God’s Word and was baptized!

She then remained faithful to God through all her persecutions. When she invited her family for her wedding, they were rude to her thinking that she wanted financial help. She insisted on their presence, so they came and were shocked to see the beautiful wedding of Franklin & Meena! Her mother and her friends were impacted by the love of the disciples and the way the wedding was arranged. Her mother told her friends, “Please go to Meena’s church, they will set your life right!” Her friends commented, “Superb wedding!” Franklin & Meena now live “Happily ever after” in Christ!

In the Kingdom, all of Meena’s dreams came true!
Tim Kernan of Los Angeles: “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’” (Isaiah 6:8) Greetings from the City of Angels Church Campus Ministry! Lianne & I are extremely honored to lead this incredible group of disciples, as well as the remarkable South Region! So far in the LA Campus Ministry this year, God has blessed us with 158 student baptisms giving us over 300 sold-out disciples on 31 campuses! Also, at the upcoming 2016 Winter Workshop on January 8-10th, to further the Tyrannus Project to have disciples on all 56 campuses of LA, we are praying and planning that the Spirit sends out Bible Talks to at least three more key campuses!

Also baptized last week in the South Region was Tiara a middle blocker on the Cal State Long Beach Women’s Volleyball Team standing 6’4″ tall! She has every reason to be prideful yet her humble heart was like Cornelius in Acts 10. Even while studying the Bible, she brought out three of her teammates to church because she wanted everyone to hear the truth like she had! Truly the Lord is working but pray for us! Go Beach! So, just a quick invite to our dear sisters in the West Region – who gallantly won the City of Angels Church Women’s Volleyball Tournament in September – the South Region is willing to have a “practice match” at any time!

From the West and AMS Regions, we held our Second Annual Run 4 Missions on Saturday, October 24th from 8AM to noon! 20 disciples gathered together at the Santa Monica Pier to run three miles to the Venice Pier and back to raise funds for our 9X Thanksgiving Missions! Several of these disciples have raised hundreds of dollars, however making us all proud was our campus freshman Klim Kostenko, who – though admittedly not as athletic as some – trained for two months beforehand to run the six miles straight to raise money for missions! What was most impressive was that after he finished the six miles and caught his breath, he then went out immediately to get more sponsors for his run and invite friends to church! What a heart for missions!

A last piece of good news: The City of Angels Church continues to build new sectors in her regions in order to multiply in not just our church but in each region! Of special note is the Southland Region which now has four sectors led by RD & April Baker, Ron & Tracy Harding, Pat & Sparkle Boea, and Miguel Mendez who is “assisted” by Cory & Jee Blackwell who lead the region!

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA – On September 13th, with a mission team of 14 disciples led by Jacob & Courtney Beas and 35 visiting disciples, the Lord blessed the Inaugural Service of the Sacramento City International Christian Church with an attendance of 132!

Most often when a congregation sacrifices and sends out the mission team leaders and members, there is a subsequent slowing down of evangelism. It should be noted that San Francisco also had the privilege to host the IGNITE Teen Event in July! Yet the Mighty San Francisco Church remained undeterred and undistracted! Since the 2015 Global Leadership Conference in early August, the Lord has blessed this thriving congregation with 13 baptisms! Two of those baptisms were Sierra and Nicco who were baptized at San Francisco’s Third Anniversary Service last Sunday! They were both brought out by their high school friend and now fellow SFSU classmate, Matthew, who was just baptized two weeks ago! The three of them are now best friends in the Kingdom!The San Francisco Anniversary Service was electric with 176 in attendance! They also unveiled the “Canaan Project” which is the plan that God put on their heart to evangelize the greater San Francisco Area! Pray for all the churches in California to have an incredible Fall harvest! And to God be the glory!

LAGOS, NIGERIA
Several months ago, Benedict Atason – a 61 year old Mainline Church of Christ preacher from a small city in Nigeria – contacted me on Facebook. I invited him to the 2015 African Missions Conference in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in late June. Proving his sincerity to join the movement, he paid his own way through his savings and selling possessions. At the conference, Benedict studied the Five Core Convictions of the SoldOut Movement with Andrew Smellie, Blaise Feumba and me for three straight days. Afterward, Benedict simply said, “I’m all in!” Then again paying his own way, Benedict came to the 2015 GLC and stayed for a month to learn from the City of Angels Church!

Therefore, joining our new plantings in Abidjan and Korezouzoua, Ivory Coast, will be the following plantings in Africa in 2016: 1) In February 2016, Blaise and Andrew will travel to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo to plant this congregation through reconstructing the 350 member remnant group! 2) Lagos will be planted by a mission team sent out from LA in April 2016 which will join the small remnant group led by Goodhope! 3) The Johannesburg Mission Team will be sent out from LA at the 2016 World Missions Jubilee in August! After building the Lagos Church for four months, the Smellies will then leave Lagos to lead this Tenth Crown of Thorns Planting!

CHENNAI, INDIA
Debs Rajan: Vannakkam! (Greetings!) The Lord has been blessing us abundantly since our Inaugural Service one year ago on September 21, 2014! God has blessed us with 102 additions – 95 baptisms and 7 restorations!





Satan, has been trying to discourage us with intense persecutions but our God has been faithful. We have had threatening calls from several disciples’ parents! One set of parents came to our service with lawyers to question us. Their daughter is 22 years old and was working as a Software Engineer. After the service, they forcefully took her away to their hometown. Her father used to beat her with a stick while asking the question, “Can your Jesus save you now?” She refused to compromise! Her parents then admitted her to a mental institution and asked the doctors to drug her so she would lose her memory and forget about the church and Jesus. But our sister kept fighting the good fight! The ordeal ended when she complied to do higher studies, a plan foretold by a pagan Palm Reader!
She accepted to study for her Masters… in Chennai! Her mother and uncle brought her back to Chennai for admission. She took the opportunity to come to church and the disciples were overjoyed to see her! Hugs and tears were exchanged! Sadly, that very night our sister was drugged and made unconscious, her hands and legs bound, and then she was transported back to the same mental institution. She is now kept locked in her house. She is still fighting for her faith! Our God has been protecting her and saving her life. Please remember her in your prayers. In spite of all this, God has blessed the efforts of all the leaders of the Chennai Church by giving us exactly 40 additions – 38 baptisms and 2 restorations – in 60 days! 16 are from the campus!

MOSCOW, RUSSIA
Oleg Sirotkin: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3) I still vividly remember that it was a very snowy and cold day on February 1, 2015 for the Inaugural Service of the International Christian Church in Moscow! The Moscow Mission Team was composed of 17 Russian and Ukrainian disciples who spent their own money to travel and train in the South Region of the LA Church! Through God’s grace these 17 courageous disciples were joined by the 33 in the Moscow Remnant Group – who all counted the cost – to form the Moscow ICC! These 50 disciples witnessed a modern day miracle as God gave us an attendance of 227!

Another addition to our “staff family” is Masha who in spite of severe persecutions from her family sacrificed a very well paying job to become an intern! She also was in LA for training and returned to Moscow to plant the church. God used her to start the Teen Ministry here in Moscow and all of us were so happy to see the first teen baptism in April – her 13-year old sister Janet!This summer at the GLC, we also saw the Kingdom appointments of Zhenya & Julia Sobolev – former full-time ministers and the leaders of the church in Minsk from the previous movement! Zhenya first met the new movement in 2010 in Kiev. At that moment he was in sin and had many doubts, but after meeting with Kip decided to join! After his good example, four months later Julia joined the movement wholeheartedly! It is amazing to see how God has raised them up! Prayerfully they will lead a church planting in the near future!

Incredibly, in the last six weeks this up-and-coming congregation has had 12 additions; 6 baptisms, 5 restorations, and 1 place membership from our sister church in Toronto!In the Singles Ministry, one restoration that was especially moving was a young woman named Sadhvi Monfleur, who was originally baptized in the Teen Ministry in LA in 2000. She drifted as she “fell through the cracks” after the demise of our former fellowship. Once she found us online, she visited and at her first service was asked to study the Bible. Immediately she said “yes” and exclaimed that “this is the church in which I was baptized!” Sadhvi studied diligently every day and was restored the very next Sunday! She immediately “got to work” picking up right where she dropped off!



MANILA, PHILIPPINES
Kyle Bartholomew: Greetings from Metro Manila, Philippines! I am excited to report what God has been doing in the church since our Inaugural Service to the present time. On June 7, 2015 we held our Inaugural Service to kick-off the official planting of the Metro Manila International Christian Church! With just 9 disciples on the mission team from LA joined by 49 from the Manila Remnant Group, God gave us an attendance of 306!

“He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous – to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:16-17) One of the great stories of inspiration has been the Castro family that came from our former fellowship!After visiting only our Inaugural Service, Simple & Jeniffer Castro decided to place membership! Simple stated right after the worship, “This is the church I was baptized into and I will not deny the Spirit’s call!” He later stated upon placing membership the following Sunday, “Without discipling, the last 10 years have been hell for me and my family! We have been holding on by a thread.” Within the following month, three of his four daughters placed membership and his fourth was baptized into Christ! They have since been one of the most fruitful families in the church bringing many to the Lord!

On Sunday, Mark and Jazz – students at the prestigious UP Campus – were baptized into Christ!

Tim Kernan: “Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the Kingdom of God. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the Word of the Lord.” (Acts 19:8-10)
Greetings from the Campus Ministry of the City of Angels International Christian Church (CAICC)! Lianne & I are so excited and glad to be back on campus with all the brothers and sisters preaching the Word this Fall! I want to say how proud I am of all the campus disciples and campus leaders from each region who are so bravely and boldly imitating Christ on campus!

The fruit of our focus on Bible Talks is now beginning to be seen as we had 1,610 at Sunday’s Bring Your Neighbor Day and 15 additions this week!
Following this very intense month of August, in September the City of Angels Church held its Annual Labor Day Picnic and Fun Day! All of our members and their children gathered that Labor Day morning at William R. Mason Regional Park in Orange County. The 12 Regions were divided into eight teams for sporting competitions. Highlighting these events was the finals of the two day CAICC Women’s Volleyball Tournament! The Women’s Volleyball Tournament was dreamed of and overseen by Brandyn Speckman very similarly as Cory Blackwell built our CAICC Basketball League, where almost all the teams were men. This first year the West Region Sisters won this highly competitive event!

Welcome to the 2014 Global Leadership Conference – ZION’S DREAMERS! Not since the first century has a “Christian Movement” evangelized the nations in one generation, yet the SoldOut Discipling Movement has deep convictions that “God desires all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” in the twenty-first century! (1Timothy 2:3-4) Unique to our young movement is that we are united by Jesus’ dream to evangelize the nations in a generation, and we have a definitive plan to accomplish this noble task which we call The Crown of Thorns Project.This plan is being realized as the City of Angels International Christian Church was planted in LA by 42 disciples from Portland on May 6, 2007! During the past seven years the Spirit has multiplied these disciples into over 3,000 disciples with a Sunday attendance approaching 5,000 in 55 churches, in 26 nations, on all six populated continents in the world!
As most are aware in the SoldOut Movement, we divide every city where we plant a church into multiple regions. Under the Lead Ministry Couple for the church in each city, every region has an appointed Evangelist and Women’s Ministry Leader who have the charge of not only “taking care of the flock” in their responsibility, but also to evangelize all the lost of that region of the city. (2 Corinthians 10:13-17) So similarly to fulfill Jesus’ dream, we have divided the globe into “world sectors” that collectively span the globe “so that all [196] nations [of the world] might believe and obey Him!” (Romans 16:26)
In Luke 6:12-13, it is recorded that “Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, He called [all] His disciples to Him and chose 12 of them whom He also designated Apostles.” In striving to parallel Jesus’ plan to focus on a few and then to present them to the rest of His disciples, after much prayer by Elena & me, we would like to introduce here at the GLC those couples whom the Spirit has put on our hearts to be the SoldOut Movement’s World Sector Leaders (WSL’s): Chris & Theresa Broom – USA North Quadrant and India; Tim & Lianne Kernan – USA Northwest Quadrant and Canada; Matt & Helen Sullivan – USA South Quadrant; Michael & Michele Williamson – Europe; Oleg & Aliona Sirotkin – Russian Commonwealth; Andrew & Patrique Smellie – Africa; Cory & Jee Blackwell – Middle East; Raul & Lynda Moreno – Central & South America; Joe & Kerry Willis – Austral-China; Kyle & Joan Bartholomew – Pacific Rim; Nick & Denise Bordieri – Movement Shepherding Couple; Tony & Therese Untalan – Movement Shepherding Couple; and Michael & Sharon Kirchner – Movement Administration and Law. For the present time, Elena & I will continue to lead the City of Angels Church in LA which through our Region Leaders disciples all of the churches in the USA Southwest Quadrant, which we have called “Judea” for the past five years in reference to The Crown of Thorns Plan. (Acts 1:8)
Of special note in Luke 10, Jesus commissions a second group called “the 72.” (Fascinatingly in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition, they are called “The 70 Apostles.”) These preachers along with “The 12,” Jesus’ family, and Jesus’ women leaders composed “The 120” of Acts 1:15. These “120” became the foundation of the church as “The 3,000” that were baptized after Peter’s Pentecost Sermon were “added to their number that day.” (Acts 2:41-42) Also unique to the SoldOut Movement, and once again paralleling Jesus’ ministry, we are building a second group of unified Evangelists and Women Ministry Leaders – “our 72” – which we have chosen to call the Crown of Thorns Council. Now, let’s get to know your World Sector Leaders!
USA North Quadrant And India
Chris & Theresa Broom were both baptized in New York City in 1990 and 1983 respectively. When Chris first studied the Bible and saw the fellowship of the Kingdom, he shares that he had but three words in his head, “This is home!” For Theresa, “God answered the prayers of my youth by leading me to His people and the truth of His Word.” Chris & Theresa first met each other on a blind date in the Kingdom! They were married December 3, 1994 and now have two incredible children – Austin (17) and Maria (14). Of special note, the Brooms heroically led the Syracuse Church to become the first church to align itself with the Portland Church in 2006!

After overcoming the paralyzing effects of the Guillain–Barré Syndrome at eight years old (though he still wears braces), Chris first came to NYC to “make it big” as an actor, singer and dancer! So now, in leading the New York City International Christian Church, both Chris & Theresa have a passion to reach out to the thousands of young people “in the business” in America’s largest city! Therefore, Chris & Theresa want to add “just a little” to Alicia Keyes’ famous lyrics, “New York, where the streets make you feel brand new, and the lights will inspire you” to become a baptized “difference-making” disciple of Jesus!
USA Northwest Quadrant And Canada

Tim & Lianne were both born in Toronto, Canada. Lianne became a disciple in 1997 at 19 years old largely through the influence of her father, as she had been “raised around the church” since she was 12. Likewise baptized in Montreal, Tim recounts, “I will never forget first coming to church and seeing a beautiful sister doing a song and dance routine. I turned to the brother who invited me and told him that she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. He responded, ‘First get to know Jesus, then the sisters!’” Tim was baptized just two weeks later in 2001 and married that “beautiful woman” – Lianne – on November 1, 2003! They have two dynamic boys – Junior (5) and David (2)!
Tim & Lianne’s stand for God’s honor forced them to start a remnant group in Toronto and later in London! They have both been partners in the gospel to Elena & me since the first Portland Jubilee in 2004! Together, they have planted the Paris Church in 2012 and the Toronto Church just last month! At today’s ICCM Commencement, Lianne will receive her Masters of Ministry Degree and Tim will receive his Doctorate of Ministry Degree! With these credentials, Tim will now serve as the President and Lianne a Professor at our first extension college – the ICCM Toronto!
USA South Quadrant

Matt was born on the East Coast in Bangor, Maine and Helen was born on the West Coast in Palo Alto, California. Interestingly, Matt became a member of the Mainline Church of Christ in Louisiana because of dating a young woman. In time, he moved to San Francisco and was baptized into Christ in 1988 through the efforts of the Crossroads Movement. In a short time, this congregation became part of the Boston Movement which became the International Churches of Christ. Helen met Matt in the San Francisco Church as she was baptized before him in 1987! Matt had fathered a child before he became a disciple, yet in the Kingdom, Matt & Helen’s dating relationship was totally pure and they married as best friends on August 22, 1992. They have three children – Melissa (18), Amanda (17) and Ryan (15). All three are faithful baptized disciples, as well as Matt’s daughter Ashley (28)!
Matt & Helen came to the first Portland Jubilee in 2004 and moved to be with us a month later! They hold the honor of planting the Phoenix Church, the Santiago Church (our first Crown of Thorns Planting), and the Orlando Church! As well, though Orlando is only a two year old congregation, from there the Spirit has planted two more congregations – Gainesville and Houston!
Europe
Michael’s favorite quote comes from an old preacher, “Where it’s darkest, the light shines brightest!” Both Michael & Michele’s conversions are incredible stories of light triumphing over darkness! Michael, born and raised in Portland, was first met by a brother from LA, and then was met on separate occasions by over 10 others that invited him out to church! He recounts, “Only after I felt the hand of God in one day as I lost a significant relationship, $8000, my car, my apartment, alongside being arrested did I decide to be baptized on January 23, 2000!” Michele was born in Vietnam to a British father and Vietnamese mother. Though raised in Australia, the Spirit took her to Portland State University for college. There she was converted in three weeks! In time they led the Singles Ministry together and were married on March 6, 2003 just as the ICOC was falling apart!

Upon Elena’s and my arrival in Portland in July 2003, Michael & Michele gave us their hearts. Russian Commonwealth

Inspirationally, the Sirotkins serve as a “prototype” of the Kingdom – Oleg was born in Russia and Aliona was born in Ukraine – countries now at war with each other – but as disciples are united in Christ! Oleg had been associated with the mafia and imprisoned for reckless activity. After being miraculously freed from prison in three days, Oleg began to seek God and became a fulltime worker in the Pentecostal Church. Extraordinarily just two months after we planted the Moscow Church in 1991, Oleg was then met and “taught the way of God more accurately” and was baptized! (Acts 18:26) Aliona worked in a casino in Ukraine, became “cross ways” with her boss, and literally left for dead in the winter in the middle of a forest. One of Aliona’s girlfriends became a disciple and invited her to the Kiev Church, where she was baptized in 1993! Oleg & Aliona were married in 1995, and have two amazing daughters Sophia (13) baptized in LA and Lydia (10) adopted at two years old!
In time, the Sirotkins led the Kiev Church to grow to an attendance of 5,000 on Sundays! Remembering those “glory days,” in 2010 while fulltime, they joined the new movement because they saw the lukewarmness in our former fellowship. Today, their vision for Moscow, Kiev and all 12 Russian-speaking countries of the Russian Commonwealth is to plant churches that bring a “greater glory” for God than ever before! (Haggai 2:9)
Africa
Andrew & Patrique are both of Jamaican decent; Patrique was born in Kingston and Andrew was born in New York City! Both were baptized through the efforts of the Syracuse Church: Andrew in 2000 and Patrique in 2001. The Smellies are our “Renaissance couple!” Andrew attained a black belt in Goju-Ryu Karate, became the first African American President of Cornell University Glee Club, and was awarded a Bachelor and a Master’s Degree from this Ivy League College! Patrique is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and earned a Law Degree from Syracuse University even “arguing a practice order” before the future Supreme Court Justice – Sonia Sotomayor! They were married on August 6, 2005 and God blessed them with two phenomenal children – Naomi (3) and Isaiah (1)!

After the Brooms planted Chicago, Andrew & Patrique became the leaders of the Syracuse Church – “the little church that could… and did” – and then the Spirit called them to plant the Washington DC Church in 2008! After training in LA for two years with Elena & me, they built up the New York City Church. Upon being asked to go to Johannesburg, South Africa and to oversee the evangelization of Africa, Andrew immediately said yes, and Patrique just cried… not tears of sadness but tears of joy for this gracious opportunity to serve the Lord!
Middle East

Cory was raised a Sunni Muslim by his mom Wazirah and pursued his dream of playing NBA Basketball! God allowed Cory to fulfill his dream as he played for the Seattle Supersonics (now the Oklahoma Thunder). He was baptized in Chicago in 1990, but the Spirit called him to LA where side-by-side Cory and I initiated the Cross and Switchblade Ministry in LA, which became over a 1,000 disciples and then renamed the South Central Region! In time, he not only baptized his mom into Christ, but Cory was selected as the World Sector Leader of the Middle East for the ICOC in 1994, where he oversaw the planting and building of discipling churches in 21 nations. After the Lord had given to Cory & his wife four incredible children – Ashley (28), Amber (24), CJ (22), Avrie (17) – she left the Lord. Heartbroken, Cory wandered in a spiritual desert for 10 years, but through Lou Jack Martinez, Cory found revival in God’s new movement in LA in 2010. It was at a LA Singles Retreat a year later that Cory met the “sister of his dreams” Jee – a former top corporate fitness trainer – who was baptized in LA in 2008! They were married just a year ago the Sunday before the 2013 GLC!

Today, the Blackwells lead the thriving Southland Region of the City of Angels Church! Avrie is a key teen disciple in the region. Cory & Jee are looking forward to moving to the Middle East to spearhead this “sure-to-be-glorious” work for God!
Central And South America
Raul was born in Madrid, Spain and Lynda in Bogota, Colombia. Raul was converted in Miami at Florida International University in 1996, while Lynda – a model – first “saw the Kingdom” at a Women’s Day and was baptized in Tampa, Florida in 1997! As relatively young Christians, Raul was selected for the Caracas Mission Team and Lynda was sent by the Spirit to become an intern at six months old in the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil! They both returned from the mission field and met at a Staff Meeting in Miami! They were married on October 6, 2001 and God has blessed them with two adorable children – Felipe (9) and Bella (7)!

In 2003, they were asked to lead the Santiago ICOC. Yet as everything crashed around them, the Spirit led them to Portland, Oregon where they asked Elena & me to disciple them. In 2007, they took their stand for God, discipling, and world evangelism and thus the Santiago Remnant Group began! A few months later, the Spirit took them to LA to heal. There Lynda’s previous experience in Sao Paulo and her love for the Brazilian people served as a beacon for the Morenos to being sent to plant this Crown of Thorns City. As God’s anointed for Latin America and fluent in three languages – Spanish, Portuguese and English, the Lord has grown the seven disciples on the Sao Paulo Mission Team in a little more than two years to now 100 sold-out disciples of Jesus!
Austral-China

Joe – born in Nottingham, England – and Kerry – born in Penang, Malaysia but Australian in nationality – were both baptized in England; Joe in 1990 and Kerry in 1991. Interestingly, Kerry was “traveling around the world” with friends, came in contact with disciples, was baptized, and stayed in London while her friends moved on! Ironically, they met half a world away in Manila at our Leadership Conference! They were married on December 12, 1995 and have twins – Luke and Alexandra now both 16 years old! They led Northern England, Scotland and Ireland in our former fellowship!
After initiating the Brisbane, Australia Remnant Group, the Willises moved to LA to train in 2012. They have inspired the entire movement in their faith to raise funds for missions as well as planting the Sydney Church, which has more than doubled in their first six months! Their ultimate challenge is to evangelize China. Already, the Lord is forming the Crown of Thorns Hong Kong Mission Team through the several Chinese brothers and sisters that have been baptized in Sydney! Joe’s favorite Chinese quote is by Confucius, “Heaven means to be one with God!”
Pacific Rim

Kyle was born in Hilo, Hawaii in 1981 and stands 6’4” while Joan was born in Davao, Philippines in 1980 and is a little less than five feet tall! Kyle became a disciple in 2001 and starred for the UH Hilo Basketball Team, which once boasted all five starters as disciples! Joan shares this about her conversion, “I attended my first service in Hilo out of fear for my sister being led astray as I was told she was in a cult! Ironically, I quickly fell in love with the Lord and His church and was baptized before my sister Jen!” They married on August 14, 2004 and now have three gorgeous children – Brett (8), Conner (2) and Bree (5 months)!
Kyle’s decision to attend the 2006 Portland Jubilee and his asking of the Elena & me to disciple Joan & him was the spark that “officially” started God’s new SoldOut Discipling Movement! Not only have they planted the Hilo and Honolulu Churches, but they have developed the “Hawaii 5 – 0 Plan” to evangelize the Hawaiian Islands and Guam in the next five years! Since Joan is a “Filipina,” her heritage has guided this courageous couple to plant the Metro Manila Crown of Thorns Church in June 2015!
Movement Shepherding Couple

Like our other Movement Shepherding Couple – the Bordieris, Tony & Therese are “products of world evangelism!” Both were born in Guam in the 60’s, and came from well-known families on the Island. Adding to this was Therese winning the Miss Guam Crown in 1985! The Untalans shared the following about the Guam disciples in 1997, “The entire church fasted and prayed for us to become disciples. Afterall, our children – Jonathan now (30), Coleen (26), Tesoni (23) – loved Kids Kingdom! Though we strongly considered divorce, because of the Kingdom and discipling, we will celebrate our 27th Wedding Anniversary this year!”
The Untalans have been with Elena & me since our first days in Portland. Of these gallant disciples I can write like Paul, “I thank God every time I remember you. In my prayers… I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now!” (Philippians 1:3-5) The Untalans have been given the charge to oversee all of the Shepherding Couples of the SoldOut Movement.
Movement Shepherding Couple

Nick was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1959, while Denise was born in San Bernadino, California in 1967. Both consider themselves products of world evangelism, as Nick’s Nike colleague was transferred from Taiwan to Manila where he was baptized! They reconnected in Portland – Nike’s World Headquarters – during the time that Nick & Denise were considering a divorce. After two months of studying the Bible, Nick was baptized and then baptized Denise that same day in 2001! They have two extraordinary children – Sonrisa (15) and Makaela (14)!
The Bordieris were the most instrumental couple in getting Elena & me to move to Portland in 2003. We quickly bonded over our vision to evangelize the world and our passion for athletics, since Nick was a “small college All American football player” at Trinity College! Not only do the Bordieris serve tirelessly as “Movement Shepherds” but they also are the outstanding Directors of the benevolent arm of the SoldOut Movement Churches – MERCYworldwide! The Bordieris’ favorite Bible verse is Deuteronomy 15:11, “There will always be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.”
Movement Administration And Law
Michael & Sharon have become the dearest of friends to Elena & me. As “children of the 60’s,” Michael hails from Iowa and Sharon from Oklahoma. Sharon was baptized in 1982 at the University of Missouri led by a couple Elena & I had trained at Eastern Illinois University! Sadly Sharon fell away, but kept the truth in her heart. Michael & Sharon met while working for the Campbell Soup Company in Kansas City and were married in 1994. Michael recounts, “During our dating time, I called Sharon Wesley – “Weezie” – which I affectionately call her to this day! I started ‘church shopping’ and Sharon brought me a Bible and gently suggested that I read it! She realized I was seeking God and it motivated her to come back to the Lord! Though it took a while to get anyone to study with me, I was baptized in the Minneapolis ICOC in 2004.”

When the Kirchners heard about the “new movement,” they travelled to both Phoenix and Portland to “check things out.” After “seeing the Kingdom,” they literally left $55 million dollars “on-the-table-by-retirement” from General Mills to move to LA to be a part of the LA planting in 2007. Given Michael’s skill set, he quickly became the SoldOut Movement Administrator. Sharon has a servant‘s heart that visits the sick and reaches out to the families of disciples in a powerful way. Indeed, one of the Kirchners’ favorite Scriptures is Psalm 78:72, “[We will administer] with integrity of heart and skillful hands.”
Leaders Of The World Sector Leaders

Elena & I are so privileged and humbled to lead this incredible group of disciples! Each couple has so many gifts that surpass our meager talents. Indeed, in our leadership, 1 Corinthians 1:27 is fulfilled, “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things…” Elena & I stand in awe of God that He would use us – after failing Him in the ICOC – to become “in the world’s eyes” the “founders” of the International Christian Churches, MERCYworldwide, and the International College of Christian Ministries!
In May, I could not emotionally celebrate my 60th Birthday and 42nd year as a Christian, because Elena had been diagnosed with bone cancer – an incurable cancer. After four weeks of prayer (and juicing), Elena’s oncologist (cancer doctor) said, “I’ve never had anything like this happen! Your tests have ‘changed’ from concerning high calcium levels to normal and you no longer have any ‘cancer markers.’” We realize our days are numbered, but like Hezekiah, we are praying for many more years… so that we can see the world evangelized in our day!
I beg you, please join us in praying that the Lord will work through the World Sector Leaders, the Crown of Thorns Council, and all the hard-working disciples of the SoldOut Movement so that like the first century church, the twenty-first century church will be able to write, “All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing… This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under Heaven.” (Colossians 1:6, 23) And to God be all the glory!

Welcome to the 2014 Global Leadership Conference – ZION’S DREAMERS! Not since the first century has a “Christian Movement” evangelized the nations in one generation, yet the SoldOut Discipling Movement has deep convictions that “God desires all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” in the twenty-first century! (1Timothy 2:3-4) Unique to our young movement is that we are united by Jesus’ dream to evangelize the nations in a generation, and we have a definitive plan to accomplish this noble task which we call The Crown of Thorns Project.This plan is being realized as the City of Angels International Christian Church was planted in LA by 42 disciples from Portland on May 6, 2007! During the past seven years the Spirit has multiplied these disciples into over 3,000 disciples with a Sunday attendance approaching 5,000 in 55 churches, in 26 nations, on all six populated continents in the world!
As most are aware in the SoldOut Movement, we divide every city where we plant a church into multiple regions. Under the Lead Ministry Couple for the church in each city, every region has an appointed Evangelist and Women’s Ministry Leader who have the charge of not only “taking care of the flock” in their responsibility, but also to evangelize all the lost of that region of the city. (2 Corinthians 10:13-17) So similarly to fulfill Jesus’ dream, we have divided the globe into “world sectors” that collectively span the globe “so that all [196] nations [of the world] might believe and obey Him!” (Romans 16:26)
In Luke 6:12-13, it is recorded that “Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, He called [all] His disciples to Him and chose 12 of them whom He also designated Apostles.” In striving to parallel Jesus’ plan to focus on a few and then to present them to the rest of His disciples, after much prayer by Elena & me, we would like to introduce here at the GLC those couples whom the Spirit has put on our hearts to be the SoldOut Movement’s World Sector Leaders (WSL’s): Chris & Theresa Broom – USA North Quadrant and India; Tim & Lianne Kernan – USA Northwest Quadrant and Canada; Matt & Helen Sullivan – USA South Quadrant; Michael & Michele Williamson – Europe; Oleg & Aliona Sirotkin – Russian Commonwealth; Andrew & Patrique Smellie – Africa; Cory & Jee Blackwell – Middle East; Raul & Lynda Moreno – Central & South America; Joe & Kerry Willis – Austral-China; Kyle & Joan Bartholomew – Pacific Rim; Nick & Denise Bordieri – Movement Shepherding Couple; Tony & Therese Untalan – Movement Shepherding Couple; and Michael & Sharon Kirchner – Movement Administration and Law. For the present time, Elena & I will continue to lead the City of Angels Church in LA which through our Region Leaders disciples all of the churches in the USA Southwest Quadrant, which we have called “Judea” for the past five years in reference to The Crown of Thorns Plan. Of special note in Luke 10, Jesus commissions a second group called “the 72.” (Fascinatingly in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition, they are called “The 70 Apostles.”) These preachers along with “The 12,” Jesus’ family, and Jesus’ women leaders composed “The 120” of Acts 1:15. These “120” became the foundation of the church as “The 3,000” that were baptized after Peter’s Pentecost Sermon were “added to their number that day.” (Acts 2:41-42) Also unique to the SoldOut Movement, and once again paralleling Jesus’ ministry, we are building a second group of unified Evangelists and Women Ministry Leaders – “our 72” – which we have chosen to call the Crown of Thorns Council. Now, let’s get to know your World Sector Leaders!
USA North Quadrant And India
Chris & Theresa Broom were both baptized in New York City in 1990 and 1983 respectively. When Chris first studied the Bible and saw the fellowship of the Kingdom, he shares that he had but three words in his head, “This is home!” For Theresa, “God answered the prayers of my youth by leading me to His people and the truth of His Word.” Chris & Theresa first met each other on a blind date in the Kingdom! They were married December 3, 1994 and now have two incredible children – Austin (17) and Maria (14). Of special note, the Brooms heroically led the Syracuse Church to become the first church to align itself with the Portland Church in 2006!
After overcoming the paralyzing effects of the Guillain–Barré Syndrome at eight years old (though he still wears braces), Chris first came to NYC to “make it big” as an actor, singer and dancer! So now, in leading the New York City International Christian Church, both Chris & Theresa have a passion to reach out to the thousands of young people “in the business” in America’s largest city! Therefore, Chris & Theresa want to add “just a little” to Alicia Keyes’ famous lyrics, “New York, where the streets make you feel brand new, and the lights will inspire you” to become a baptized “difference-making” disciple of Jesus!
USA Northwest Quadrant And Canada
Tim & Lianne were both born in Toronto, Canada. Lianne became a disciple in 1997 at 19 years old largely through the influence of her father, as she had been “raised around the church” since she was 12. Likewise baptized in Montreal, Tim recounts, “I will never forget first coming to church and seeing a beautiful sister doing a song and dance routine. I turned to the brother who invited me and told him that she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. He responded, ‘First get to know Jesus, then the sisters!’” Tim was baptized just two weeks later in 2001 and married that “beautiful woman” – Lianne – on November 1, 2003! They have two dynamic boys – Junior (5) and David (2)!
Tim & Lianne’s stand for God’s honor forced them to start a remnant group in Toronto and later in London! They have both been partners in the gospel to Elena & me since the first Portland Jubilee in 2004! Together, they have planted the Paris Church in 2012 and the Toronto Church just last month! At today’s ICCM Commencement, Lianne will receive her Masters of Ministry Degree and Tim will receive his Doctorate of Ministry Degree! With these credentials, Tim will now serve as the President and Lianne a Professor at our first extension college – the ICCM Toronto!
USA South Quadrant
MATT & HELEN SULLIVAN WITH THEIR CHILDREN – RYAN, AMANDA AND MELISSA – WHO ARE ALL BAPTIZED DISCIPLES!
Matt was born on the East Coast in Bangor, Maine and Helen was born on the West Coast in Palo Alto, California. Interestingly, Matt became a member of the Mainline Church of Christ in Louisiana because of dating a young woman. In time, he moved to San Francisco and was baptized into Christ in 1988 through the efforts of the Crossroads Movement. In a short time, this congregation became part of the Boston Movement which became the International Churches of Christ. Helen met Matt in the San Francisco Church as she was baptized before him in 1987! Matt had fathered a child before he became a disciple, yet in the Kingdom, Matt & Helen’s dating relationship was totally pure and they married as best friends on August 22, 1992. They have three children – Melissa (18), Amanda (17) and Ryan (15). All three are faithful baptized disciples, as well as Matt’s daughter Ashley (28)!
Matt & Helen came to the first Portland Jubilee in 2004 and moved to be with us a month later! They hold the honor of planting the Phoenix Church, the Santiago Church (our first Crown of Thorns Planting), and the Orlando Church! As well, though Orlando is only a two year old congregation, from there the Spirit has planted two more congregations – Gainesville and Houston!
Europe
Michael’s favorite quote comes from an old preacher, “Where it’s darkest, the light shines brightest!” Both Michael & Michele’s conversions are incredible stories of light triumphing over darkness! Michael, born and raised in Portland, was first met by a brother from LA, and then was met on separate occasions by over 10 others that invited him out to church! He recounts, “Only after I felt the hand of God in one day as I lost a significant relationship, $8000, my car, my apartment, alongside being arrested did I decide to be baptized on January 23, 2000!” Michele was born in Vietnam to a British father and Vietnamese mother. Though raised in Australia, the Spirit took her to Portland State University for college. There she was converted in three weeks! In time they led the Singles Ministry together and were married on March 6, 2003 just as the ICOC was falling apart!

There Lynda’s previous experience in Sao Paulo and her love for the Brazilian people served as a beacon for the Morenos to being sent to plant this Crown of Thorns City. As God’s anointed for Latin America and fluent in three languages – Spanish, Portuguese and English, the Lord has grown the seven disciples on the Sao Paulo Mission Team in a little more than two years to now 100 sold-out disciples of Jesus!

Joe – born in Nottingham, England – and Kerry – born in Penang, Malaysia but Australian in nationality – were both baptized in England; Joe in 1990 and Kerry in 1991. Interestingly, Kerry was “traveling around the world” with friends, came in contact with disciples, was baptized, and stayed in London while her friends moved on! Ironically, they met half a world away in Manila at our Leadership Conference! They were married on December 12, 1995 and have twins – Luke and Alexandra now both 16 years old! They led Northern England, Scotland and Ireland in our former fellowship!
After initiating the Brisbane, Australia Remnant Group, the Willises moved to LA to train in 2012. They have inspired the entire movement in their faith to raise funds for missions as well as planting the Sydney Church, which has more than doubled in their first six months! Their ultimate challenge is to evangelize China. Already, the Lord is forming the Crown of Thorns Hong Kong Mission Team through the several Chinese brothers and sisters that have been baptized in Sydney! Joe’s favorite Chinese quote is by Confucius, “Heaven means to be one with God!”

Kyle was born in Hilo, Hawaii in 1981 and stands 6’4” while Joan was born in Davao, Philippines in 1980 and is a little less than five feet tall! Kyle became a disciple in 2001 and starred for the UH Hilo Basketball Team, which once boasted all five starters as disciples! Joan shares this about her conversion, “I attended my first service in Hilo out of fear for my sister being led astray as I was told she was in a cult! Ironically, I quickly fell in love with the Lord and His church and was baptized before my sister Jen!” They married on August 14, 2004 and now have three gorgeous children – Brett (8), Conner (2) and Bree (5 months)!
Kyle’s decision to attend the 2006 Portland Jubilee and his asking of the Elena & me to disciple Joan & him was the spark that “officially” started God’s new SoldOut Discipling Movement! Not only have they planted the Hilo and Honolulu Churches, but they have developed the “Hawaii 5 – 0 Plan” to evangelize the Hawaiian Islands and Guam in the next five years! Since Joan is a “Filipina,” her heritage has guided this courageous couple to plant the Metro Manila Crown of Thorns Church in June 2015!

Like our other Movement Shepherding Couple – the Bordieris, Tony & Therese are “products of world evangelism!” Both were born in Guam in the 60’s, and came from well-known families on the Island. Adding to this was Therese winning the Miss Guam Crown in 1985! The Untalans shared the following about the Guam disciples in 1997, “The entire church fasted and prayed for us to become disciples. Afterall, our children – Jonathan now (30), Coleen (26), Tesoni (23) – loved Kids Kingdom! Though we strongly considered divorce, because of the Kingdom and discipling, we will celebrate our 27th Wedding Anniversary this year!”
The Untalans have been with Elena & me since our first days in Portland. Of these gallant disciples I can write like Paul, “I thank God every time I remember you. In my prayers… I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now!” (Philippians 1:3-5) The Untalans have been given the charge to oversee all of the Shepherding Couples of the SoldOut Movement.

NICK & DENISE BORDIERI AND THE MERCY AMBASSADORS!
Nick was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1959, while Denise was born in San Bernadino, California in 1967. Both consider themselves products of world evangelism, as Nick’s Nike colleague was transferred from Taiwan to Manila where he was baptized! They reconnected in Portland – Nike’s World Headquarters – during the time that Nick & Denise were considering a divorce. After two months of studying the Bible, Nick was baptized and then baptized Denise that same day in 2001! They have two extraordinary children – Sonrisa (15) and Makaela (14)!
The Bordieris were the most instrumental couple in getting Elena & me to move to Portland in 2003. We quickly bonded over our vision to evangelize the world and our passion for athletics, since Nick was a “small college All American football player” at Trinity College! Not only do the Bordieris serve tirelessly as “Movement Shepherds” but they also are the outstanding Directors of the benevolent arm of the SoldOut Movement Churches – MERCYworldwide! The Bordieris’ favorite Bible verse is Deuteronomy 15:11, “There will always be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.”

Michael & Sharon have become the dearest of friends to Elena & me. As “children of the 60’s,” Michael hails from Iowa and Sharon from Oklahoma. Sharon was baptized in 1982 at the University of Missouri led by a couple Elena & I had trained at Eastern Illinois University! Sadly Sharon fell away, but kept the truth in her heart. Michael & Sharon met while working for the Campbell Soup Company in Kansas City and were married in 1994. Michael recounts, “During our dating time, I called Sharon Wesley – “Weezie” – which I affectionately call her to this day! I started ‘church shopping’ and Sharon brought me a Bible and gently suggested that I read it! She realized I was seeking God and it motivated her to come back to the Lord! Though it took a while to get anyone to study with me, I was baptized in the Minneapolis ICOC in 2004.”

When the Kirchners heard about the “new movement,” they travelled to both Phoenix and Portland to “check things out.” After “seeing the Kingdom,” they literally left $55 million dollars “on-the-table-by-retirement” from General Mills to move to LA to be a part of the LA planting in 2007. Given Michael’s skill set, he quickly became the SoldOut Movement Administrator. Sharon has a servant‘s heart that visits the sick and reaches out to the families of disciples in a powerful way. Indeed, one of the Kirchners’ favorite Scriptures is Psalm 78:72, “[We will administer] with integrity of heart and skillful hands.”

Elena & I are so privileged and humbled to lead this incredible group of disciples! Each couple has so many gifts that surpass our meager talents. Indeed, in our leadership, 1 Corinthians 1:27 is fulfilled, “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things…” Elena & I stand in awe of God that He would use us – after failing Him in the ICOC – to become “in the world’s eyes” the “founders” of the International Christian Churches, MERCYworldwide, and the International College of Christian Ministries!
In May, I could not emotionally celebrate my 60th Birthday and 42nd year as a Christian, because Elena had been diagnosed with bone cancer – an incurable cancer. After four weeks of prayer (and juicing), Elena’s oncologist (cancer doctor) said, “I’ve never had anything like this happen! Your tests have ‘changed’ from concerning high calcium levels to normal and you no longer have any ‘cancer markers.’” We realize our days are numbered, but like Hezekiah, we are praying for many more years… so that we can see the world evangelized in our day!
I beg you, please join us in praying that the Lord will work through the World Sector Leaders, the Crown of Thorns Council, and all the hard-working disciples of the SoldOut Movement so that like the first century church, the twenty-first century church will be able to write, “All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing… This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under Heaven.” (Colossians 1:6, 23) And to God be all the glory!

In August at the 2014 Global Leadership Conference will be the Second Commencement Ceremony of the International College of Christian Ministries (ICCM)! This “dream become reality” was made possible when the Lord answered our prayers on August 16, 2012 as the California Bureau of Postsecondary Education approved our application for the founding of the ICCM. We received the “Verification of Exempt Status” which allows the ICCM to grant Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Ministry according to “our” Biblical doctrines and standards.
This “school of prophets” (2 Kings 2:3-5) is not a substitute for Jesus’ plan to train ministers by walking with them side-by-side for a period of years. (Mark 3:13) The SoldOut Movement Leadership believes that “our appointed ministers” – Evangelists, Women’s Ministry Leaders, Shepherds, Shepherdesses, MERCY Directors and Administrators – are among the best trained and most effective in all Christendom. Whereas most Christian Denominations have “seminaries” that offer degrees, what we have lacked hitherto is the vehicle to accredit the robust and dynamic course of training that our leaders already undertake, while augmenting our present efforts with more classroom oriented Biblical studies.

Interestingly, the European Degree System – Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees – has been one of the most successful European cultural exports in history. “The Doctorate” (Latin: docio) originated in Medieval Europe as a license to teach (Latin: licentia docendi) at Medieval Universities. Its roots can be traced to the early church when the term “Doctor” referred to the Apostles, Church Fathers and other Christian authorities who taught and interpreted the Bible. This academic program is now present in almost every part of the world – even in China and Saudi Arabia, which are countries not viewed as being “pro-western.” This Degree System has been fully embraced globally, as the most legitimate indication of competency and qualification in a professional field. With the founding of the ICCM, we are able to accord these very high honors to our students as we recognize years of training and work for the advancement of the gospel all over the world in this generation.
Noteworthy for some countries, these degrees will help facilitate our missionaries receiving visas. Last year, at our First Commencement Ceremony, we awarded 90 BA Degrees, three Master’s Degrees, and one Doctorate Degree in Ministry. Lord willing, this year at our Second Commencement Ceremony, we will bestow 57 BA Degrees, four Master’s Degrees and one Doctorate Degree! According to The Chronicle of Higher Education (http://chronicle.com/article/Where-Life-Earns-Credit-/64618), “The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) estimates that about half of all colleges and universities offer some form of experiential-learning assessment… In a national study of 48 colleges, the council found that students who completed some form of a prior-learning assessment had higher graduation rates than other students, and also completed their degrees faster.” In other words, more and more colleges offer credit to their students for “on the job” learning and experience. As well, these individuals earn their degrees “more quickly” than students in traditional degree programs! So in the ICCM, we too recognize past years of training, service and the “expert building” of churches. (1 Corinthians 3:10) Therefore, an ICCM BA Degree may be attained in one of two ways: 1) By years of service as an appointed Evangelist, Women’s Ministry Leader, Shepherding Couple, MERCY Director or Administrator or 2) By being selected to be an intern (paid or unpaid) training under a Ministry Leader while going through the formal training sessions of the ICCM. Excitingly, since the ICCM is “a work in progress,” starting at the Second Commencement Ceremony we will now award Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in one of four “tracks:” Ministry, Shepherding, Charity Services, and Administration.
THE ICCM BACHELOR’S DEGREE
There are three prerequisites to being accepted into the ICCM to earn the prestigious BA Degree: 1) The applicant must be at least one year old in the Lord; 2) The applicant must be trained and serving as a Bible Talk Leader; and 3) The applicant must be recommended by a Full-time Ministry Individual. After being accepted, the following course work is required:

The tuition for the Bachelor’s Degree is a total of $6,000. The tuition for the Master’s Degree is the same. The tuition for the Doctorate Degree is $7,000. For the young people who serve as paid or unpaid interns, a full scholarship for the Bachelor’s Degree is granted.

Our Chairman of the Board of Regents that oversees the ICCM is the Administrator for the SoldOut Movement, Michael Kirchner (BA – University of Iowa; BA – ICCM; MBA – University of Minnesota; M.Min. – ICCM). All of us on the ICCM Leadership Team – the Faculty and the Board of Regents – have the vision to expand our school to include as many cities as possible where we have SoldOut Movement Churches. In order “to open” an ICCM Extension Campus, one must hold at least a Master’s Degree from the ICCM. That said, only an individual with a Doctorate Degree of Ministry (D.Min.) from the ICCM can award a Doctorate Degree. Excitingly, since Dr. Tim Kernan planted the Toronto International Christian Church in July and since he will be awarded the Doctorate Degree at this year’s Commencement, we are formally announcing the founding of our first Extension Campus: the ICCM – Toronto! Tim will serve as President. As well, Tim and his wife Lianne (BA – Concordia University; BA – ICCM; M.Min. – ICCM) will both serve as Professors!
“Modern Christendom” lacks the impact of its first century roots because it has strayed so far from the Scriptures. As the prophet Hosea lamented, “[God’s] people are destroyed from a lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6) Prayerfully, in the future because of the instilling of the Word of God and its principles through the ICCM, the SoldOut Movement will “boast in the Lord” that her people and her unified leaders who taught them “excel in everything – in faith, in speech, [and] in knowledge…” (2 Corinthians 8:7) Therefore, the ICCM is dedicated to the glory of Jesus Christ hence our motto comes from John 1:14, Venia et Veritas – “Grace and Truth.” So, in the words of John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States of America: “The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it – and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.” And to God be the glory!

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick…” Proverbs 13:12
The word “acedia” has been lost to the modern English language and is the forgotten of the original “Seven Deadly Sins.” Though acedia is not explicitly named on the many lists of sins in the Bible (Proverbs 6:16-19; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21; 2 Timothy 3:1-5), a monk named Evagrius Ponticus (345 – 399AD), one of the most gifted intellects of his day, compiled in Greek from Scripture his list of the “Eight Evil Thoughts.” In this order Ponticus included: gluttony (gastrimargia), fornication (porneia), avarice (philargyria), hubris (hyperephania), sadness – sadness at another’s good fortune (lype), wrath (orge), boasting (kenodoxia), and acedia (akedia). Acedia is listed last because Ponticus considered it “the most troublesome of all.”

A short time later, another celebrated monk John Cassian (360 – 435AD), translates Ponticus’ list into Latin but with slight variances of meanings. Cassian’s “Eight Evil Thoughts List” is: gluttony (gula), fornication (fornicatio), avarice (avaritia), pride (superbia), despair (tristitia), wrath (ira), vainglory (vaingloria), and acedia (acedia).
Then almost 200 years later, Gregorius Anicius (540 – 604AD) – the pope known as “Gregory the Great” and called by the Protestant Reformer John Calvin “the last good pope” – compiles a list of sins derived from Cassian’s list which Anicius calls “The Seven Deadlies.” In every day terms, Anicius combines pride and vainglory as well as despair and acedia, and then adds envy. Interestingly, he “changes” fornicatio (fornication) to “luxuria” – which expands the meaning from illicit sex to intense desire… lust! In Anicius’ mind, this could be lust for power, food, drink, knowledge, money, and/or fame. Therefore, in English, the very first list of “The Seven Deadly Sins” is: lust, gluttony, greed, acedia, wrath, envy and pride.
Over the centuries the word “acedia” has been transliterated into “sloth” on most “Seven Deadly Sin Lists,” not to mention “dropped from daily use” in the English language. But what is the definition of acedia – this once so “prominent of sins?” The Oxford Concise Dictionary of the Christian Church reads, “A state of restlessness and inability either to work or to pray.” According to Wikipedia, “Acedia is the neglect to take care of something that one should do. It is [best] translated apathetic listlessness; depression without joy… In early Christian thought, the lack of joy was regarded as a willful refusal to enjoy the goodness of God and the world God created.”
The respected theologian Thomas Aquinas (1225 – 1274AD) believed that acedia was that which Paul refers to in 2 Corinthians 7:10 as “worldly sorrow.” Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321AD), the prolific Italian writer of The Divine Comedy, calls acedia “the failure to love God with all one’s heart, all one’s mind, and all one’s soul.” The seriousness of this sin is underlined by the fact that for centuries many writers have expressed that acedia’s ultimate manifestation is a “despair which leads to suicide.”
As for me, acedia was not part of my vocabulary until I stumbled on this archaic word while casually researching “The Seven Deadly Sins.” Immediately when I read about its earlier definitions, my heart was stirred because I – for the very first time – could identify my feelings and spiritual condition from 2001 – 2003AD. These were the years that I was put on sabbatical (taken out of all leadership and influence) and then fired for my convictions about the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16- 17); about the Biblical mandate of a central leadership with a central leader for God’s people (Numbers 27:15-18; Judges 2:6-19); that discipling is a command of God for every Christian (Matthew 28:20); that the “visible church” is to be composed of only sold-out disciples (Acts 2:41-42); and that we as God’s people are commanded to evangelize the nations in our generation. (1Timothy 2:3-4)

After reading what others had written about acedia, I too began to search the Scriptures. For me, Proverbs 13:12 sums it up best, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul teaches that when one is not regularly inspired by the “body and blood of Jesus” during communion that this is the reason “people in the church” are “weak, sick… and [have] fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 11:30) The state of being “weak” most disciples comprehend, and “fallen asleep” of course means one has fallen away but still attends church. Yet, “spiritual sickness” is a term rarely used but it “fits” acedia!
Perhaps from these two passages one begins to understand why “sloth” in time was substituted for “acedia.” When one is physically sick, one is usually lethargic – “hurting” and thus unmotivated “to get out of bed.” So it is with “spiritual sickness” – one’s heart is hurting so badly that one “feels” that it’s just too hard “to get out of bed” to do the will of God. Sloth on the other hand is simply laziness – one “loves doing nothing” more than working for God. Acedia and sloth may look the same – no work done for God – but in fact they are very distinct. This seemly subtle substitution on The Seven Deadly Sins List may have been the beginning of Satan’s scheme “to hide” the Biblical concept of acedia from our day and age.
So what is the cause of the forgotten sin of acedia – “spiritual sickness?” I believe it is bitterness in one’s soul. In Hebrews 12 the Spirit says, “Endure [all] hardship as discipline [from] God.” Since God is sovereign then everything that happens to us either God makes happen or He allows it. The Spirit says that “yes” this “discipline is painful,” but God’s purpose is to “produce a harvest of righteousness and peace…” So when hardship comes one has a choice either to become a “better Christian” or a “bitter Christian!” In other words, one “gets down and depressed” because one’s life is not going as they had “hoped.” Your hope is “deferred!” This is why Hebrews 12:15 teaches, “See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” Many of us “picture” bitterness as a raging, hateful and loud individual. However, actually for most, bitterness makes us depressed, lethargic and withdrawn… just like Cain whose “face was downcast.” (Genesis 4:6)

As I studied out this sin, I knew that I must look at the life of Jesus because He was “tempted in every way just as we are yet was without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) In Jesus’ darkest hours in Gethsemane, He shares with His three closest brothers – Peter, James and John, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38) Then He fell to the ground praying for three hours, “Father if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39) Luke adds that His prayer was so intense that Jesus sweat drops of blood. Then Luke continues, “When Jesus rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. ‘Why are you sleeping?’ Jesus asked them. ‘Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.’” (Luke 22:45-46) Most notably, Jesus is tempted with acedia and overcomes through prayer and surrendering His will to God’s, but His disciples succumb to acedia – “exhausted from sorrow” – failing to even pray!
So in retrospect in examining my own life, I was deceived by my sin and Satan. (Hebrews 3:12) Since I was a “happy pagan” before I was baptized; a “happy” young Christian; a “happy” Evangelist; and a “very happy” husband and father, when great adversity came, my heart was not like Jesus “who for the joy set before Him endured the cross.” (Hebrews 12:2) When I faced “opposition from sinful men” (some I caused by my sin against them) I grew “weary and began to lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:3) I did not “see God” anywhere in my hardship but I was bitter towards those that I perceived “hurt my family and me.” Confused by Satan through the sin of acedia, I almost lost my ideals, my Biblical convictions, and my salvation. (John 8:43-44) Praise God that the Scriptures reveal “the truth, and the truth… set me free!” (John 8:32)

However some nights… I still struggle with acedia – “exhausted with sorrow.” In fact, I was recently convicted by the Disney movie FROZEN. I had a dream where Elena & I were sitting in a plane and watching other passengers board. Then two “brothers” (who in my opinion) did my family and me “a great deal of harm” came down the aisle. (2 Timothy 4:14) When the first one came to me, I immediately stood up and angrily rebuked him! When the second one passed, I was even more sinful! I said absolutely nothing as I scornfully watched him pass by. I told Elena the dream in the morning and I knew I needed to repent of this bitterness that had crept back into my heart. Then a few days later, I received an email informing me that the man to whom I had said nothing had just lost a son to cancer. Elena asked if I was going to write a sympathy note… She asked three days straight! I then cried when I saw that my heart was “FROZEN!” In the movie, the only cure for a “frozen heart” is “an act of true love.” Remarkably, after I wrote and sent a warm email to this brother, I felt a peace come over me as my heart “melted” from this “act of love.” I learned that I have to “re-crucify” my bitterness and reaffirm my forgiveness, especially since none was ever asked.
I write these things to help any others who can identify with me. Through God’s incredible mercy and patience, I now see clearly that God had to take away everything that I valued too much. Like Nebuchadnezzar – who was “driven away from people and ate grass like cattle” – God greatly humbled me (except for eating grass) making me understand that I am nothing. (Daniel 4:33) Through the “hardship” of losing all my leadership and most of my “friends,” I learned that I must live only to praise “the Most High!” (Daniel 4:34) I thank God for Elena whose fierce loyalty and love pointed me to God and gave me strength to persevere.
I do believe that for most “remnant veteran disciples,” acedia is our “sin of choice” as our “hope” of a glorious church that would reach all nations was “deferred” by our sins! How do we repent of acedia – “the most troublesome of sins?” First of all, you must identify it in your life. Secondly, you must surrender to the sovereignty of God, embracing your hardships by asking what God wants you to learn.
I still remember quite vividly studying with Carlos Mejia at the Good Earth Restaurant after he visited the Inaugural Service of the City of Angels Church in May 2007. At that time he shared that he was “visiting and checking out” many different churches and could not commit to any because he was “so sad” about the demise of our former fellowship and “how he was treated.” Perhaps the most impacting Scripture for him was Luke 5:31-32, “Jesus answered them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.’” I shared with Carlos from this passage that to be “sick” is to be a “sinner” and that “repentance” makes us “healthy.” In response, Carlos repented of his acedia – spiritual sickness – that day and placed membership the next Sunday! But now when Carlos shares about that Sunday, he simply says, “I was restored to my first love!” Furthermore, today Carlos powerfully leads the Santiago de Chile International Christian Church!

Be sure of this, “healing” from this sin is not a matter of time but “repentance!” Then as part of your “repentance” of bitterness, forgive those who have hurt you or you will not be forgiven. (Matthew 18:23-35) Since acedia is “the willful refusal to enjoy the goodness of God” be aware that this sin will return with his seven deadly demon friends unless you willfully “rejoice in the Lord always… [and pray] with thanksgiving… [so that] the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus… [Therefore] whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things… [Remembering you] can do everything through Him who gives [you] strength!” (Philippians 4:4-13) Even overcoming acedia! And to our Merciful Father in Heaven be all the glory!

The word “acedia” has been lost to the modern English language and is the forgotten of the original “Seven Deadly Sins.” Though acedia is not explicitly named on the many lists of sins in the Bible (Proverbs 6:16-19; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21; 2 Timothy 3:1-5), a monk named Evagrius Ponticus (345 – 399AD), one of the most gifted intellects of his day, compiled in Greek from Scripture his list of the “Eight Evil Thoughts.” In this order Ponticus included: gluttony (gastrimargia), fornication (porneia), avarice (philargyria), hubris (hyperephania), sadness – sadness at another’s good fortune (lype), wrath (orge), boasting (kenodoxia), and acedia (akedia). Acedia is listed last because Ponticus considered it “the most troublesome of all.”

A short time later, another celebrated monk John Cassian (360 – 435AD), translates Ponticus’ list into Latin but with slight variances of meanings. Cassian’s “Eight Evil Thoughts List” is: gluttony (gula), fornication (fornicatio), avarice (avaritia), pride (superbia), despair (tristitia), wrath (ira), vainglory (vaingloria), and acedia (acedia).
Then almost 200 years later, Gregorius Anicius (540 – 604AD) – the pope known as “Gregory the Great” and called by the Protestant Reformer John Calvin “the last good pope” – compiles a list of sins derived from Cassian’s list which Anicius calls “The Seven Deadlies.” In every day terms, Anicius combines pride and vainglory as well as despair and acedia, and then adds envy. Interestingly, he “changes” fornicatio (fornication) to “luxuria” – which expands the meaning from illicit sex to intense desire… lust! In Anicius’ mind, this could be lust for power, food, drink, knowledge, money, and/or fame. Therefore, in English, the very first list of “The Seven Deadly Sins” is: lust, gluttony, greed, acedia, wrath, envy and pride.
Over the centuries the word “acedia” has been transliterated into “sloth” on most “Seven Deadly Sin Lists,” not to mention “dropped from daily use” in the English language. But what is the definition of acedia – this once so “prominent of sins?” The Oxford Concise Dictionary of the Christian Church reads, “A state of restlessness and inability either to work or to pray.” According to Wikipedia, “Acedia is the neglect to take care of something that one should do. It is [best] translated apathetic listlessness; depression without joy… In early Christian thought, the lack of joy was regarded as a willful refusal to enjoy the goodness of God and the world God created.”
The respected theologian Thomas Aquinas (1225 – 1274AD) believed that acedia was that which Paul refers to in 2 Corinthians 7:10 as “worldly sorrow.” Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321AD), the prolific Italian writer of The Divine Comedy, calls acedia “the failure to love God with all one’s heart, all one’s mind, and all one’s soul.” The seriousness of this sin is underlined by the fact that for centuries many writers have expressed that acedia’s ultimate manifestation is a “despair which leads to suicide.”
As for me, acedia was not part of my vocabulary until I stumbled on this archaic word while casually researching “The Seven Deadly Sins.” Immediately when I read about its earlier definitions, my heart was stirred because I – for the very first time – could identify my feelings and spiritual condition from 2001 – 2003AD. These were the years that I was put on sabbatical (taken out of all leadership and influence) and then fired for my convictions about the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16- 17); about the Biblical mandate of a central leadership with a central leader for God’s people (Numbers 27:15-18; Judges 2:6-19); that discipling is a command of God for every Christian (Matthew 28:20); that the “visible church” is to be composed of only sold-out disciples (Acts 2:41-42); and that we as God’s people are commanded to evangelize the nations in our generation. (1Timothy 2:3-4)
Blaise is one of the SoldOut Movement’s most charismatic preachers! His vulnerability particularly sharing about acedia’s suicidal temptation has drawn the many that relate to him to the power of the cross!
After reading what others had written about acedia, I too began to search the Scriptures. For me, Proverbs 13:12 sums it up best, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul teaches that when one is not regularly inspired by the “body and blood of Jesus” during communion that this is the reason “people in the church” are “weak, sick… and [have] fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 11:30) The state of being “weak” most disciples comprehend, and “fallen asleep” of course means one has fallen away but still attends church. Yet, “spiritual sickness” is a term rarely used but it “fits” acedia!
Perhaps from these two passages one begins to understand why “sloth” in time was substituted for “acedia.” When one is physically sick, one is usually lethargic – “hurting” and thus unmotivated “to get out of bed.” So it is with “spiritual sickness” – one’s heart is hurting so badly that one “feels” that it’s just too hard “to get out of bed” to do the will of God. Sloth on the other hand is simply laziness – one “loves doing nothing” more than working for God. Acedia and sloth may look the same – no work done for God – but in fact they are very distinct. This seemly subtle substitution on The Seven Deadly Sins List may have been the beginning of Satan’s scheme “to hide” the Biblical concept of acedia from our day and age.
So what is the cause of the forgotten sin of acedia – “spiritual sickness?” I believe it is bitterness in one’s soul. In Hebrews 12 the Spirit says, “Endure [all] hardship as discipline [from] God.” Since God is sovereign then everything that happens to us either God makes happen or He allows it. The Spirit says that “yes” this “discipline is painful,” but God’s purpose is to “produce a harvest of righteousness and peace…” So when hardship comes one has a choice either to become a “better Christian” or a “bitter Christian!” In other words, one “gets down and depressed” because one’s life is not going as they had “hoped.” Your hope is “deferred!” This is why Hebrews 12:15 teaches, “See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” Many of us “picture” bitterness as a raging, hateful and loud individual. However, actually for most, bitterness makes us depressed, lethargic and withdrawn… just like Cain whose “face was downcast.” (Genesis 4:6)
When our former fellowship crashed, Oleg’s heart gave into acedia which led him to lose his dreams, leave the ministry, and invest his talents in business. Praise God he repented and will now lead the Moscow Mission Team in December!
As I studied out this sin, I knew that I must look at the life of Jesus because He was “tempted in every way just as we are yet was without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) In Jesus’ darkest hours in Gethsemane, He shares with His three closest brothers – Peter, James and John, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38) Then He fell to the ground praying for three hours, “Father if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39) Luke adds that His prayer was so intense that Jesus sweat drops of blood. Then Luke continues, “When Jesus rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. ‘Why are you sleeping?’ Jesus asked them. ‘Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.’” (Luke 22:45-46) Most notably, Jesus is tempted with acedia and overcomes through prayer and surrendering His will to God’s, but His disciples succumb to acedia – “exhausted from sorrow” – failing to even pray!
So in retrospect in examining my own life, I was deceived by my sin and Satan. (Hebrews 3:12) Since I was a “happy pagan” before I was baptized; a “happy” young Christian; a “happy” Evangelist; and a “very happy” husband and father, when great adversity came, my heart was not like Jesus “who for the joy set before Him endured the cross.” (Hebrews 12:2) When I faced “opposition from sinful men” (some I caused by my sin against them) I grew “weary and began to lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:3) I did not “see God” anywhere in my hardship but I was bitter towards those that I perceived “hurt my family and me.” Confused by Satan through the sin of acedia, I almost lost my ideals, my Biblical convictions, and my salvation. (John 8:43-44) Praise God that the Scriptures reveal “the truth, and the truth… set me free!” (John 8:32)
During the days after the demise of our former fellowship, Lynda’s acedia caused a nervous breakdown. Today, through God’s and her husband’s unconditional love Lynda is “rejoicing in the Lord!”
However some nights… I still struggle with acedia – “exhausted with sorrow.” In fact, I was recently convicted by the Disney movie FROZEN. I had a dream where Elena & I were sitting in a plane and watching other passengers board. Then two “brothers” (who in my opinion) did my family and me “a great deal of harm” came down the aisle. (2 Timothy 4:14) When the first one came to me, I immediately stood up and angrily rebuked him! When the second one passed, I was even more sinful! I said absolutely nothing as I scornfully watched him pass by. I told Elena the dream in the morning and I knew I needed to repent of this bitterness that had crept back into my heart. Then a few days later, I received an email informing me that the man to whom I had said nothing had just lost a son to cancer. Elena asked if I was going to write a sympathy note… She asked three days straight! I then cried when I saw that my heart was “FROZEN!” In the movie, the only cure for a “frozen heart” is “an act of true love.” Remarkably, after I wrote and sent a warm email to this brother, I felt a peace come over me as my heart “melted” from this “act of love.” I learned that I have to “re-crucify” my bitterness and reaffirm my forgiveness, especially since none was ever asked.
I write these things to help any others who can identify with me. Through God’s incredible mercy and patience, I now see clearly that God had to take away everything that I valued too much. Like Nebuchadnezzar – who was “driven away from people and ate grass like cattle” – God greatly humbled me (except for eating grass) making me understand that I am nothing. (Daniel 4:33) Through the “hardship” of losing all my leadership and most of my “friends,” I learned that I must live only to praise “the Most High!” (Daniel 4:34) I thank God for Elena whose fierce loyalty and love pointed me to God and gave me strength to persevere.
I do believe that for most “remnant veteran disciples,” acedia is our “sin of choice” as our “hope” of a glorious church that would reach all nations was “deferred” by our sins! From Pier to Pier is this year’s theme for the Santa Barbara International Christian Church walk-a-thon! We are raising money for local missions as we impact and transform lives through compassionate service.
“As a faith-based organization, we are called by the scriptures to have a heart of compassion – which we consider to be “passion in action”. Our compassion must be manifested in our daily lives through our actions: looking after the poor, healing sickness and disease, providing food and shelter and defending the weak.” (www.mercyworldwide.org)
The Santa Barbara International Christian Church is part of a worldwide fellowship. Santa Barbara is one out of five national and international church plantings planned for 2014. The others include: Gainesville, Florida (January), Toronto, Canada (March), Dallas-Ft. Worth (August), Moscow, Russia (December).
Since our Inaugural service in January, we started 3 new bible studies located on both UCSB and SBCC Campuses. In February we fundraised and sent two of our members to Santiago, Chile for a Missions conference. We have already began a monthly MERCY worldwide volunteer outreach. We partner with organizations in our local communities where we Maximize our Efforts to provide Relief and Care and serving the Youth. So far we have served Y-STRIVE For Youth Inc., a program focused on youth with high risk behaviors, by helping them prepare for their yard sale fundraiser.
Our plan for this walk-a-thon is to help our newly planted church sustain these already incredible efforts by asking for donations of $20 ($2 per mile). However a donation of any amount is appreciated. For contributions greater than $250 a receipt will be issued for tax deduction purposes. We are asking for your help to make this event effective and impacting by becoming a sponsor.
The walk will be on Saturday, April 19th. We will start at Goleta Beach, and complete the 10 mile walk at the Santa Barbara Stearns Wharf.
There is a $10 registration fee for anyone desiring to participate in the Walk-a-thon.
